The word Ramadan is derived from the Arabic word related to the sands of the desert, or from the root word that means parched thirst or a land that is heated and baked by the sun. It is expressive of hunger and thirst felt by those who fast during this holy month. Ramadan is indeed by nature a time ti sacrifice and observe its importance.
During this holy month, Muslims all over the world abstain from food, drink and sexual pleasures as well as other physical needs during the day. It is a time to focus attention on Allah, purify the soul and practice sacrifice, for on sacrifice is based the law of receiving.
Through fasting Muslims not only experience hunger and thirst but they also understand the plight of those very unfortunate who have very little to eat in this world. Fasting is not merely refraining from food and drink but it is about refraining from all evil, thoughts, words and deeds. The word for fasting Sawm in Arabic is based on this very concept and it means “to refrain”. Fasting does not just purify the body of toxic materials but also cleans up the lives, thoughts and feelings of a Muslim who prays and worships Allah and spends the holy month in His thoughts.
Through increased devotion Muslims come closer to Allah and recognize His bounties and gifts that we as creations of Allah receive from Him. It is a month of thanks giving and caring for every soul and for what nature has provided us with. As a result Muslims become generous in charity and develop feelings of goodwill and generosity towards others.
Fasting brings about self control on a Muslim, through which he learns to practice good manners, speech and habits of patience and endurance. While the gatherings in the community tightens bonds of love and peace among the communities all around the world.
Much has been written about the month of Ramadan, Sawm, Salaat and Zakat that are some of the crucial points of this holy month but it would suffice to say that its a month repentance, endurance, patience and most importantly the month in which Allah has revealed the Holy Quran.
May Allah bring peace on His entire creation.

The Dawoodi Bohras all around the world have a unique way among all Muslims when it comes to living through the holy and pious month of Ramadan. Muslims around the world are zealous about humility, patience, good deeds, fasting and prayers during these days. The bohras are more than just enthusiastic. When it comes to the days of worship and fasting the preparation starts well off days ahead. White clothes and topis for men and well embroidered colourful Ridas are prepared by members of the community. Ensured that these clothes are well washes and cautiously taken care of in terms of Taharah. Even the very little children prepare themselves and have their own Sujjadas and tasabih with just as much enthusiasm to join their elders in Imamat Namaaz.
The community members have a unique way of gathering at iftar after breaking the fasts as a result the entire community has a very well prepared and healthy diet throughout the holy month. Again at certain places around the globe the community members also have a habit to gather for Tahajjud prayers and suhoor is also arranged for the musalleen. Often members of the community take part in mass congregations held specifically forTilawat al-Quran in which Huffaz al-Quran recite from the Quran-e-Majid by tarteel while others follow. The concept of such a gathering is to help as many Mumineen who are not well versed in the recitation to complete the Tilawah of the entire Quran at least once during the month of Ramadan in an orderly manner. Short Surahs from Juz Amma are also recited before and after Imamat Namaaz at masjids by Ahkam al-Tajweed to raise awareness among Mumineen about the same.
The most important of all in the everyday event of a Bohra during Ramadan is offering Imamat Namaaz and Tilawat al–Quran while no one would ever think of missing a fast unless he is traveling or advised by a doctor not to.

The name just suggests that it might be a somewhat thriller or another of those ghost movies. The statement at the beginning announces the same notion. It reads, it is not flesh and blood but the heart that makes us fathers and sons. Indian movies shed a lot of focus on the father and son relationship or depict the respect given by the younger generation to the elders and this one is a truly remarkable plot.
Talks about racism issues that still prevail in the society even though the law may prohibit it. The law is but limited and cannot prevail unless people’s thoughts change. We cannot live in a peaceful society unless each one of us keeps away from the bias of gender, race, religion or whatever. The complexes of superiority are symptoms of the disease of the mind and physical medicine cannot do away with it. The movie has a wonderful plot showing the differences prevailing within our so called modern societies and developed countries in addition to the loss of morals which are still there among the developing nation. At the center of the plot is the “Cobra” who is taught by his father and teacher, trained in the art of martial arts, has the highest regard of his father. The apprentice is taught the art of silence for it is the greatest open secrets of history, be still and know that I am God. In the stillness and silence the soul of the student and son is elevated to care and respect the father, giving up wealth and risk life for rescuing a hero from the prison and finally live with him after 15 years, while on the other hand in a very wealthy Japanese family of the US is a son who takes down his father several times in order to earn his attention and thus succeed as heir to the family business.
In the midst the action packed martial arts movies lies the moral of contentment and the purpose of life. The relation of a father with his child no matter what the distance of time or space may be among them. The sacrifices of a hero and the biased and greedy thoughts of our society. The plot also sketches the loyalty of friends and loved ones, the willingness of content people to sacrifice their possessions for the sake of truth and he lure of the material world. All in all its a nice watch if you love those action packed moves of the ancient art of self defense.

His Holiness Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin TUS has always instructed his followers, Mumineen, to care for the environment, preserve resources and avoid wastage of any kind. All this is in accordance to the guidance of the Holy Quran and the sayings of our beloved Prophet Mohammed al-Mustafa Rasulallah (SA). Huzurala TUS is said to have given strict instructions for the usage of lights and electricity even at Saify Mahal in Mumbai, where many times he himself has been seen switching off the lights right after sunrise. It has also been reported that during the Iftetah of Masakin Mohammediyah, the gents hostel, at Jamea Saifiyah in Surat, he himself switched off the lights of rooms and staircases after returning from its inspection.
We, Dawoodi Bohras proudly follow his example in his endeavor to care for the environment and mother nature. Let us all join hands for the sake of the Earth for it gives us food, shelter and blessings. Let us join help ourselves and our future generations to come.
Remember not just to turn out lights tonight, but to switch off every possible electronic gadget and do not light candles or burn any other fuel for light unless extremely necessary.
