High Tech approach in India

India has been an emerging nation which has produced more and more computer geniuses and experts during the past 2 decades that has really upheld the .com industry and the silicon valley. During the past years due to the inward approach on the government in India the nation faced a brain drain until now when the west or rather the emerging economies has seen India as an outsourcing haven for all the support and technical work required.

Education in India has also come a long way with the literacy rate going up and the public becoming more and more aware of their surroundings. The news that India unveils $30 laptop is just over whelming and will not only make a difference to the student sector but will also have huge impact on the way the Indian markets and the businesses operate. There has been a significant change in the technology sector in India then that before 10 years and the dream of Rajiv Ghandi of handing over computers to every person might seem to be coming true. With the Nano laptop which I might prefer to call it for its low price things are really going to rock. As for the services that would be needed to compliment this Nano laptop, such as the Internet, I think India has already achieved a major break through in the sector. At some places in Indi, such as Chhattisgarh, a broadband connection with unlimited bandwidth and a complimentary land line phone with a speed to 256kbps costs less then 5 USD per month. While a 3G usb connection with unlimited bandwidth and a speed of 128 kbps cost only 7 USD a month even while roaming all over India. Such a huge leap of Indian economics and a large consumer base is a business venue that anyone would want to wet their feet in.

Indo-Pak Talks and National Security

Indeed the National Security of any country is the most worrying concern for not only the government but that of all its citizens for a peaceful and prosperous life. India has a rigid stand on the cross border terrorism issue as well as the Pakistani side circles around the not so important issue of Kashmir. The strong stand of India on issues of terror is just perfect and any common man would consider it wise for his own safety and security.

Mr Mani Shankar, a former BJP minister said that no matter what the situation be the Ind-Pak talks should continue. There is no other option for the Indian government to tackle this crucial and vital issue without sitting on the table with the Pakistani authorities, or does India wish to go on the so called “War on Terrorism” just like the US did in Iraq. Off course peace talks held quietly within close doors would benefit both the sides rather and media hyped hot talks. I do agree on this small note made by Mr. Mani Shankar during his Zee TV interview.

Another important aspect that the the Indian government needs to address with top priority is to synchronize its policies within its various departments and ministries. There are several issues on which the different government departments are not aware with the policies of each other.

Electricity and Fuel Shortage

There were 2 articles in today’s Khaleej Times pointing at the energy consumption levels in the USA and the squat that the US government is doing S we read these articles to conserve energy and save our future, the future of humanity on the whole.

The article Step out of the vehicle was an interesting read about the car culture in the US and it may seem that the American are too much in love with their SUV’s but the case is somewhat similar to the Middle East as well. Living in the UAE since the past 30 years it we know how inexpensive cars can be. The over head costs however are paid by the environment. The culture we live in, in the UAE make people prouder of their cars and the bigger they are the higher the status symbol. The fuel energy that these vehicles rely on to continue running has had great impact on the way we live, the way we thing, the global climate and off course our pockets. As the global economy was melting down it seemed we burned more and more money as we pumped up are SUV’. At times it does make me ponder that the government here is so much so worried about the environment that it is taking major steps in all directions including strict rules imposed on the industrial sector as well. Why not then take a major step towards those SUVs are really swallowing major resources.

Fuel has had major impact on basically and practically everything that we can think of and the Khaleej Times published and article on Clean Energy and the major steps that the US is trying to take. I am always a fan of those who uphold the environmental issue and have been taught by our community leader who has established Burhani Foundation, for the very purpose, to think in that direction.

The UAE authorities have always tried hard and have worked towards achieving major breakthroughs in preserving the health of our environment through the years. However, much can be done and much more investments are required in this area of concern. Both capital investment as well as that of resources. The UAE fortunately has and abundance of both. Natural renewable energy is one thing we have here in abundance. The Emirates has miles and miles of desert land which could  be used to harvest both the solar and wind energies to the optimum level and the authorities do need to encourage capital investment in those fields.

Recently we are having severe power shortages in Sharjah and Sewa blames it on huge demand and fuel shortages. With its abundance of natural resources and ways to harness renewable energy the authorities need to have a paradigm shift and start looking outwards rather then inwards else the problems will keep rising further in the coming future.

As for the high demand and shortage of fuel for the electricity, many visitors coming to the UAE have often commented on the way the roads are lighted all over the place. Most of them including myself believe that the usage of such high illumination of highways stretching hundreds of kilometers is a waste of natural resources if not financial at all.

The authorities need to look on these perspectives on a federal level in the UAE rather then the state level if we do want to ensure a safe and secure future for the coming generation. We must look towards harvesting green and renewable energy rather then relying on fuel if we do want to give something back in the energy trade to mother nature. The motto is to preserve nature for much larger gains and profits rather then immediate.

Etisalat and the growth of Telecommunications

A healthy market is where there is healthy competition and in the Telecommunications market in the UAE there is almost no competition. While there is Du to compete with the top market shareholder etisalat it has a long way to go. On the other hand it’s like a brother/sister competition and a win win situation with less advantage for the end user.

The UAEnic that is .ae has been handled by Etisalat since its very beginning but recently there are many expensive registrars that have the service available. Khaleej Times has an interesting story announcing the Dhs 3.8 Billion/ $1 Billion profit posted by eisalat in the first half of the year. Interesting news indeed in a slow economy where everyone is crying but the telecommunication sector in the UAE. The residents are really happy to see the market bouncing back but its all at the cost of consumers. How does a service industry make such huge postings. No competition and low quality customer support is where the profits are bagged from.

Just an example for low Quality customer care is the registration of the .ae domain. UAEnic which is operated by Etisalat has no means of registering or even renewing a domain online, leave alone the extras such as DNS services and so on. A company that’s boasts to be high tech and has all the resources of the nation lacks in providing such simple services to the consumer. One has to go to the etisalat office if a simple DNS setting needs to be done rather then simply doing it 24/7 from the comfort of his chair.

Talk about customer care and one would have to wait for no less then 15 to 20 minutes to get a call connected to the customer support, if you are talking about the internet. Boasting a high tech society in the UAE the costs of broadband and dial-up services are costlier then some of the under developed countries in the world with very less infrastructure.

Mobile charges are no where compared to the prices in countries like India and Pakistan while the etisalat boasts of millions of subscribers. The reason behind this might be the ratio of people having disposable incomes in the UAE being higher then that of the sub-continent.

A lesser competitive atmosphere in any niche can be suicidal for the industry itself where the capitalists thrive on high profit yields and a consumer focused market if far from being sighted. The growth is merely for the profit building of the company rather then being consumer focused which is a much more win-win situation then the prior. Low quality customer support with expensive services would surely bag good returns  in term of profits and since there is no choice for the consumer but to survive the monopolistic trend of the market sharks they cannot do anything. Healthy competition is not only good for the consumer but is necessary for the growth of the economy and the niche itself.
